A New Adventure Begins

DAY 1: As usual,  I was a bit jittery all yesterday morning,  just wanting to get the airport and flight things all done with. Our flight, delayed as per usual for Jetstar, arrived the month after we left Sydney.  Here it is November already! 3:43am and we are having a cuppa in our hotel room,  the hotel to which no taxi driver would take us - too close to be worth it for them.  A 10-15 minute walk at this hour of the morning wasn't really how I envisaged starting the day!

Something we noticed almost as soon as we left the airport is the difference in bird sounds.  We were welcomed to NZ but some lovely bird warbling away in the middle of the night.  No idea what it was.

Sleep beckons ...

We have now picked up our camper and have headed to Wenderholm Regional Park for our first night. This is a lovely area at the mouth of the Puhoi River about 60km north of Auckland Airport on the west coast of the peninsula.
We took a while sorting out where to put everything in the camper then went for a short walk.
There are some amazing Pohutukawa trees (NZ Christmas Trees) here.  They are huge - must be centuries old.  An important tree for Maori people apparently.
Chatted to a lovely couple who gave me all sorts of suggestions for good places to go on this trip.  I think we'll need longer than 7 weeks!
